10 Most Famous Movie Soundtracks

Chances are you may be familiar with several songs from the 10 most famous movie soundtracks of all time.  With millions of units sold, these soundtracks are hugely popular around the world. Here are the ten most famous movie soundtracks of all time according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The following list is based on record sales:

  1. “The Bodyguard” tops the list with seventeen million records sold. “I Will Always Love You” performed by Whitney Houston is a notable song from this soundtrack.
  2. “Saturday Night Fever” comes in at number two on the list with over fifteen million units sold.  The BeeGees, Kool & The Gang and K.C. and The Sunshine Band are some of the performers that made this soundtrack the second highest selling of all time.
  3. Third on the 10 most famous list is “Purple Rain” with thirteen million units sold. This soundtrack may be considered Prince’s crowning jewel.
  4. “Forrest Gump” is fourth on the list with twelve million sold. Elvis Presley, Joan Baez, Aretha Franklin and many more artists are featured on this classic soundtrack.
  5. “Dirty Dancing” is the fifth most famous movie soundtrack, with eleven million units purchased. The Five Satins’ “In the Still of the Night” and The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” are some of the famous tunes from this popular soundtrack.
  6. The number six movie soundtrack is “Titanic,” with eleven million sold. In 1997, Titanic was the first movie soundtrack to reach the number one slot on the Billboard charts in two decades.
  7. The “Lion King” sold ten million units and it is number seven on the list. Elton John and Tim Rice collaborated to create this Disney masterpiece.
  8. The number eight movie soundtrack of all time is “Top Gun” with nine million units sold. “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” by The Righteous Brothers and “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin are the key tracks on this album.
  9. “Grease” featuring Olivia Newton-John and “Footloose” featuring Shalamar are tied at number nine on the 10 most famous list.  These two movies have roughly eight million units sold each.
  10. “Waiting to Exhale” rounds out the list at number ten with seven million units sold. Babyface produced and co-wrote this famous mid-nineties soundtrack.
